Pagano was nominated by Charles Lewis Grant, acting executive director of the living history museum. Grant selected Pagano for his instrumental efforts in helping the counties of Chesterfield and Henrico with the 400th anniversary of the Citie of Henricus. Pagano designed, choreographed, recruited and implemented special programs to highlight the unique "firsts" that occurred at Henricus. Four of the events were new and Pagano developed innovative ways to present these topics to the public. He single-handedly recruited 125 historical interpreters for the site's 400th commemoration during Publick Days in September. Throughout the year, Pagano represented Henricus in dozens of media interviews and at various public appearances. He became the historical interpretation supervisor at Henricus Historical Park in 2007. Pagano is a trained special education teacher and has worked as an actor and historical consultant on hundreds of films.

Henricus Militia Commander Receives Community Leadership Award

This month, Woodmen of the World Richmond/ Chesterfield Lodge 159 presented Dennis Strawderman with a Community Leadership Award. Charles Lewis Grant, acting executive director of Henricus Historical Park, was at the presentation to highlight Strawderman's exceptional civic service on behalf of the museum. A former Marine, Strawderman commands the all-volunteer Henricus Militia and often portrays Sir Thomas Dale who founded Henricus as a military fort in 1611. Militia service was compulsory for all free males capable of bearing arms in the colony. Today, the 23-member Henricus Militia offers infantry, artillery and colonial river commerce demonstrations for Henricus Historical Park and the surrounding community. Since 1952, Woodmen of the World lodges have expressed gratitude to outstanding citizens of the community - those who have gone the extra mile in civic service and community betterment efforts. Nationally, Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society is the largest fraternal benefit society with open membership in the United States (http://www.woodmen.org/).

Henricus Receives Livestock Donation from Chesterfield County Farm Bureau to Initiate "Agriculture in the Classroom" Partnership

Today Henricus Historical Park received two female adolescent goats from the Chesterfield County Farm Bureau to initiate a partnership with the Virginia Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom (AITC). John Smith described her as playful, spirited and smarter than the other children. Later, Pocahontas was credited for saving Smith at the hands of her father. Captured by Samuel Argall in 1613, Pocahontas was originally taken to Jamestown. Sir Thomas Gates, fearful of reprisal from Powhatan, turned Pocahontas over to Sir Thomas Dale at Henricus. Dale instructed Rev. Alexander Whitaker to care for Pocahontas and instruct her in the ways of Christianity. While living at Henricus she converted to Christianity, was baptized and took the English name Rebecca. She met and was courted by John Rolfe, whom she married in April 1614. After their marriage, Powhatan signed a peace treaty with the English settlers which lasted until March 22, 1622. In 1616, Pocahontas traveled to England with her husband and infant son Thomas. While there she contracted an illness, possibly tuberculosis or small pox, and died at the age of 22. She remains buried in Gravesend, England. In addition, experts from Transcend Paranormal (aka R.I.P. Ghost Hunters) will share findings of recent paranormal activity at Henricus. Specialists have visited Henricus several times and captured a misty figure on video, experienced objects moving and discovered Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVPs) in virtually every building onsite. EVPs have been recorded of people speaking, furniture dropping and cannons firing. Students were given the opportunity to learn how a large-scale move is made including meet-and-greets with the film's director, producer and stars and a glimpse into the wardrobe, make-up and catering facilities for the movie. TDHS is home to Chesterfield County's Visual and Performing Arts Specialty Center for students highly interested or talented in music, theater, dance or visual arts. "To Have and To Hold" is a colonial-era movie based on a best-selling American novel written in 1900. Filming at Henricus will conclude this week.

Set Design Underway at Henricus for "To Have and To Hold" Movie Filming

Crews have begun designing the set for the "To Have and To Hold" movie filming at Henricus. So far, an enormous gate and palisade have been created behind the Court de Guard and in front of the forge. Mount Malady has been transformed from a hospital into a church with pews, new landscaping and a steeple to be added shortly. A huge haystack has been built near the carpentry shop and period props have been placed around the Historic Citie for various scenes. The crew set up a base camp for the film production including tents and trailers in the unpaved parking lot. Henricus Historical Park will be closed to the general public from October 3-19 for the filming. Previously scheduled school field trips will take place as planned along with "School of the Musketeer" on October 7-9. The funds will be used to maintain the “Yehakins,” or longhouses, in the Virginia Indian site. The undertaking was led by Laura Shelton, past president of VSCAR (2010-2011), as her state project. As a resident of Chesterfield with a strong interest in American Indian culture, Shelton felt compelled to help a local organization dedicated to the preservation of the pre-revolutionary period. To raise funds, Shelton traveled around the state to local chapters informing them about the educational mission of Henricus Historical Park. She sold t-shirts, conducted raffles and accepted donations. Local societies supported her project with fundraisers they conducted as well. Shelton presented the check to the Henricus Foundation during a reception to welcome Godspeed from Jamestown Settlement for Publick Days and the site’s 400th anniversary. She is a member of the William Byrd Society, a local chapter of VSCAR.

Henricus Historical Park Temporarily Closed for Filming

Henricus Historical Park will be closed from October 3-18 for the filming of "To Have and To Hold." The weekend kicked-off with the arrival of Godspeed from Jamestown Settlement with remarks by representatives of the Virginia House of Delegates; Chesterfield and Henrico Counties; the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation; Daughters of the American Revolution and the Chickahominy Indian Tribe. Despite rainy conditions, nearly 4,000 people enjoyed the weekend’s family-friendly activities ranging from musket and cannon firing demonstrations to Virginia Indian songs and dance. Through today, school groups will participate in guided tours of the Godspeed and colonial and Virginia Indian settlements. Henricus would like to thank the more than 100 living history interpreters, dozens of volunteers, sponsors and donors, Board of Trustees and dedicated staff for creating a memorable, educational and entertaining event.

Preparations at Henricus Kept Site Safe From Hurricane Irene

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g-6ZO5QXBBM/Tl-210jwZaI/AAAAAAAAACc/FXDfbIvCBDY/s400/Yehakin%2B-%2BIrene.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5647433493503829410" />
Staff at Henricus Historical Park worked furiously last week to protect the site from Hurricane Irene. With Publick Days and the site’s 400th anniversary only weeks away, protecting the grounds, structures and artifacts were of high concern. In preparation, artifacts were removed from all buildings and stored in the education center. Tarps were placed over three Yehakins (or longhouses) in the Virginia Indian site and secured to the ground with stakes. The site’s cannon was moved to a protected location. Hard work by the staff paid off with the Yehakins unharmed and only minor damage from a fallen tree incurred to the tobacco barn. Chesterfield County removed the tree on Monday. Many thanks to the Henricus staff for their hard work preparing for Hurricane Irene!

Governor's Cabinet Visits Henricus

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CEXV4Goyn-M/TlbjqTst5nI/AAAAAAAAACU/pmFf_c3qJpY/s400/Cabinet%2BVisit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5644949498937337458" />
On Tuesday, August 23rd several members of Governor McDonnell’s cabinet visited Henricus Historical Park for a tour and briefing about the historic site. Everything we do, from our SOL-aligned education programs to camps and general visitation emphasize age-appropriate, hands-on, team-building activities. Period-dressed interpreters make history come alive through demonstrations in the re-created 17th-century settlement.

Q: What types of groups typically participate in the education programs?

A: More than 18,000 children visit Henricus Historical Park each year. From more than 10 school districts, students in pre-kindergarten through high school, book programs at Henricus. Public, private and home schools, including day care centers and student and adult clubs and organizations visit the Park. Henricus is currently partnering with school districts and other museums to provide history training for educators statewide.

Q: How are you incorporating the site’s 400th anniversary into programming?

A: We’ve taken into account the diverse cultures living in the area and how they traded not only goods but ideas with each other. History programs feature the interactions and individual personalities of Pocahontas, Powhatan, Sir Thomas Dale and the Reverend Alexander Whitaker. The expanded Virginia Indian site and newly constructed Rocke Hall will be integral to new and existing programs. Henricus is partnering with the Virginia Indian community, other museums, colleges and organizations, to provide a rich depth of understanding about our programs.

Q: What are your favorite aspects about working at Henricus?

A: I really enjoy meeting a wide variety of people and participating in many different projects. Mornings may be spent teaching programs to second graders in the Virginia Indian site, while teacher institutes, grant writing sessions and lesson planning may occupy the afternoon. In all aspects, it is a fulfilling career. You are not only a part of the revisualization of the past, but making the past relevant to the future.

Q: What do you envision for the future of the Park?

A: I envision growing interest from the local community, state and nation in Virginia’s historical past and its important role in shaping our country. To meet this demand, we look forward to providing a wider range of services – historical research, videos, exhibits, archaeological surveys, environmental programs and more general public and school programs. We hope to encourage a broader interest in Henricus Historical Park for many years to come.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://henricus1611.blogspot.com/2011/02/meet-margaret-e-carlini-education.html' title='Meet Margaret E. This two-story structure re-creates the home of Reverend Alexander Whitaker. As minister to the settlement, Reverend Whitaker was an influential and highly respected man. His position as minister made him the logical choice to provide a home for Pocahontas when she was brought to Henricus in 1613. He tutored Pocahontas in the English traditions and oversaw her conversion to Christianity. As a close acquaintance of John Rolfe, Reverend Whitaker probably introduced Rolfe to Pocahontas, his future bride. Rocke Hall is on schedule to be completed in time for the next 400th commemoration event about Henricus Colledge on March 26-27.

Welcome to 2011 and the blog for Henricus Historical Park!

Henricus Historical Park would like to invite you to several upcoming events commemorating our 400th anniversary – so mark your calendars now!

All 400th commemoration events at Henricus Historical Park are open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission is $8 for adults and $6 for children 3-12. I thought I'd do a photo essay of the fences around Henricus.

Every fence is different - but every fence is a period style and illustrates a technique used for building fences in the 17th century. Most of the fences our interpreters build are either made with recycled materials found around the site or are from materials harvested on site.

(Mosaic made using the Mosaic Maker)

Springtime in Virginia

Before I do anything else, I have to apologize to everyone for being so slow with posting new things on the Henricus blog. We've been terribly busy with everything on site. I'll give you a brief update of what has been happening...

Happy Spring! (Which is quickly becoming summer...) We've been growing a lot of things on site. Our gardens, under the care of Lindsay, our Agricultural Specialist, as well as the rest of the Henricus Staff, sprouted and grew faster than we knew what to do with what was growing there. The Tobacco Plantation had a full crop of lettuces, spinach, carrots, onions, turnips, and radishes. We're still waiting for our pease to take off, as well as the beans. The Citie Garden, which is located behind the Court de Guard (or the soldier's house) looks equally as terrific.

New Animals! We also have a few new additions at the Tobacco Plantation, whom I should introduce. First is Buttercup the pig, who arrived at Henricus back in April. If you subscribe to our Facebook page, then you've already seen her smiling piggy face. She's a Vietnamese Pot-bellied pig that was donated to our site. While the breed isn't exactly period correct for our site, she is interpreting 17th century pig life on the farm.

We also received 10 new Dorking chicks from Jamestown. They're still babies, but they're the same size as the Old English Bantams. They also don't really understand the whole "going into the coop at night" thing yet, but we're working with them.

Events-A-Rama! Over the past two months, Henricus Historical Park hosted two events. The first, Extraordinary Labors, was held back in April. This event featured the trades and crafts of the 17th century.

The last event we hosted was our annual Musket, Sword, and Pike. It just happened to fall on Memorial Day weekend, which went along well with the military theme of the event. Not only did we have musket demonstrations and cannons firing, courtesy of the Virginia Militia and the New Amstel Militia, but we also had Powhatan Indian weapons demonstrations, tunes from Tom Rivers on Sunday, and numerous other demonstrations by our dedicated volunteers and staff. I was staked out at the laundry back at Mount Malado, the first colonial hospital, where we were interpreting the roles of women in 1614 Virginia, when Henricus was still under martial law.

We really have been busy! In addition to all of that, we also planted our crops for the summer - tobacco and corn. All of our crops are loving the late spring showers we've been getting at least once a week. There is still a lot of construction going on, including the new fireplace in the Court de Guard and the mantle piece in the Planter's House.

Check back soon!

~ Jenny
Historical Interpreter, Domestic Skills

Rainy days and Sundays

Everything is becoming greener around the site, which means spring is coming soon! We're starting to turn over and plant our gardens, the wattle fencing is nearly finished, and the chickens are finding bugs again. But it's still cold out there, and raining, so we interpreters are hanging out inside for some training brush-ups. (Lots of stuff about Sir Thomas Dale, Great Charters, and 1622 Massacres.)

I hope the weather is nice for this upcoming weekend because that is our first of three springtime events, Colonial Crafts and Games. We will have interpreters on site and our education staff joining in to present visitors with period crafts and games. If you're in the area, come on out and visit!

This same weekend, ironically, is the anniversary of the Bloody Friday Massacre. On March 22, 1622, 347 English colonists were killed when they were attacked by Powhatans led by Opchanacanough, Chief Powhatan's brother. It's one of our main interpretive points at our Tobacco Plantation - and that means our time frame will be changing from 1622 to 1620 for the start of the spring/summer season.

Welcome to Henricus!

While this is technically my second post, I wanted to introduce the blog - and Henricus - properly. When I started writing this out, I realized there was no way I could introduce Henricus without writing a small novel. But you do need some kind of introduction before I suddenly launch into behind-the-scenes and historical interpretation from the front lines. Henricus is turning 400-years-old in two years, after all.

Henricus Historical Park is a 32 acre living history museum located along the James River, just south of Richmond. We have a dedicated group of interpreters and volunteers who portray the daily lives of English soldiers, tradesmen, indentured servants, the goodwives & single women, and Native Americans who lived in the areas of Coxendale and Henrico between the years 1611 to 1622. To do that, we have 13 structures on site, in which we interpret the 17th century. We perform the activities and chores, wear the same types of clothing, and eat the same meals they may have done 400 years ago.

As interpreters, we use "encounter third-person interpretation" to speak to visitors. So if you were to speak to us, we'd speak to you from a modern perspective. But for special occasions, we might break out the character interpretation. :)

To give you a glance around the site, I thought I'd post a few pictures. We had a rare occurrence on Monday: 4" of snow! (More about that later!) I hope you enjoy a look at the Henricus buildings in the snow...

This is the Powhatan village where we interpret the Native Americans who lived in Virginia 400 years ago. Arrohateck (the name of this particular village) is mostly used for school programs.

Walking from Arrohateck, you enter into the English village. The first place you'll see is 1611, the Court de Guard, where sergeants of the guard would spend their time in the fort at Henricus.

Up the road from the Court de Guard is the trades area. Here we have the Citie barn, which is where our carpentry shop is located. There is also our working blacksmith's forge where the blacksmith and his apprentice work.

As you leave the trades area, the road takes you past the tavern, which we use for school programs and events. It is modeled after the 1640s Ordinary at St. Mary's City.

The original "Mount Malado" was built on a hill over looking the James around 1614. It would have served as a guesthouse for colonists just arriving to Virginia, but it is credited as being the first English hospital. Our recreation of Mount Malado is a lot smaller than the original, which would have had 80 beds and five fire places.

The next building being constructed at Henricus Historical Park is "Rocke Hall". This was the parsonage for Reverend Alexander Whitaker. Right now, it looks like a swimming pool, but that is the foundation for what will be a really cool two story structure once it is finished.

Following the path from Mount Malado and Rocke Hall, you'll come across the tobacco plantation. This represents a farm from the 1620s. We don't have a lot of animals living there right now - just chickens. The barn is solely for tobacco. The house is a typical dwelling of a yeoman farmer.

</lj-cut>

I'll go into more detail on the buildings in a later post, but that's the basic tour around the buildings. I'm sure Sir Thomas Dale would have approved, however...)

It's about time we brought the 21st century to the 17th century out here! :)

I guess I'll introduce myself before I go further. I'm one of the historical interpreters who works in the recreated historic citie. My name is Jenny and I will be updating this blog weekly with all of the tales of toil from the recreated settlement we call Henricus.

The real Henricus (or "Henryco"...or "Henericus"...there are a lot of ways of spelling it!) was founded by Sir Thomas Dale in 1611 as a second settlement following Jamestown. Today, we're not positive where the original settlement of Henricus stood. There's been a lot of development in this area and a lot of changes following the Civil War in the 1860s. While progress is great, it's a little rough on us historians who are trying to find our own 'Atlantis'. But, for now, Henricus Historical Park has 13 structures that we interpret as the years 1611 to 1622. I'll save descriptions of them for a later post. ;)

Until we go live, check out Henricus Historical Park on Facebook. Oh - and our website (http://henricus.org) too!

Jenny
Historical Interpreter, Domestic Skills
